I’m halfway through reading the book Selfish, immortal and travelersby Carlos López-Otín. The title alludes to the origin of cancer, caused by the transformation of cells that, at a certain point, decide to obey only themselves and begin to grow without restraint, traveling through the different organs in search of new territories to colonize. These cells carry within themselves the germ of immortality and, in their eagerness to live eternally, the first thing they attack is the organism they inhabit. There is (I’m afraid) a disturbing metaphor that, depending on the circumstances, can be applied to human behavior.
